I think the interesting aspect of this relationship is the "before." What circumstances led these two people together? Why did they stay together long enough to progress to marraige? What chemistry was there in the beginning, and how might it have faded?

Interestingly enough, these two apparently have a long history together. In the art book, there was a picture of Susan and Derek at the prom, implying that they've known each-other since high school.

Well, time changes people. I suppose at first, Derek was an honest, friendly guy with ambition. Somewhere along the lines, his ambition took over. Susan probably paid no mind because in her sight, he was working for their future. It was probably true, but the change was so gradual that she barely even noticed (who would notice their basement flooding if it was by a drop at a time?). With enough exposure, people can come to accept a lot of things we would find unsavory. Just look at the number of abusive relationships where they don't want to split.

And this picture also appears at the beginning of the movie when Susan's three friends sneak into her house, so it's most definitely canon. ;)

Thanks for such a nice post but don’t forget to check out the exterior of your home as well. Clogged drains, gutters, or downspouts can be major culprits when it comes to channeling water in the wrong direction. Additionally, landscape slope can play a major role. Landscaping should always slope away from your home. Sloping towards it means the risk of channeling excess water into your home and not filtering it away from it. Even re-landscaping your yard is preferable to repairing major basement flooding.flooded basement
