I was reading the Art book and it makes several references to Insectosaurus being female. Yet, Link refers to Insectosaurus as male. Technically speaking, in the larval state, Insectosaurus is genderless, until conversion to imago form, which is when gender is obtained. Did the movie ever address the fact that of which gender Insectosaurus is? Also, I'm confused about the way Insectosaurus' imago form is represented. Link refers to Insectosaurus as a butterfly, but the antenna belong to that of a male moth. Which would answer the question of gender if Insectosaurus is a moth, not a butterfly. However, that doesn't explain the eyes, with obviously feminine lashes. I had initially dismissed the idea because moths are usually brown, black or white. But researching the topic has revealed that certain species of moths can be as colorful as butterflies. Maybe the Dreamworks staff should have done a little more entomological research while making Insectosaurus!

Yeah, there's really... no exact answer to this. I get the feeling that Insectosaurus WAS intended to be outed as female at the end of the movie- but the lines were cut for whatever reason (maybe for censorship reasons) and now Insecto's gender is up to interpretation. And, really, I think that's the best answer you could say: Insectosaurus's canon gender is whatever you feel like it is.
Personally, I feel it's pretty obvious they meant for Butterflyosaurus to be female (the tidbit about the type of antenna belonging only to a male moth is interesting, but given character designer's love of Insect Gender Bender fails, it's probably fair to not put too much stock into it). However, there's enough evidence in the movie for me to believe she's still a male- so, again, I'm going with the ol' "if they don't explicitly confirm it's so in the movie canon itself, it's not binding."
The fact that avoid stating her gender in the Halloween special is also telling.

In my head Insecto is both.
