I kept hearing comments on occassion that at the end of the series, Coverton does an about face and abandons his plans for invasion. Since I hadn't seen the final episode, I just assumed this was something I hadn't witnessed yet. But when I did see the final episode, at no point whatsoever does Coverton indicate he's not evil anymore.
Which got me thinking, was it a case of wanting fanon to be canon?
On another forum, there was an involved discussion about how certain types of fans can be so obsessed with villians that in their minds, the villian is the good guy. I personally witnessed this behavior on another forum where someone insisted the major enemy was the hero and the protagonists were the villians for resisting. This person was rather obsessive about this point and could not be convinced otherwise.
On a related topic, I was editing a wikia which is a reference guide for a cartoon. When I got to certain episodes (3 in total), they said that a certain guest character appeared when in fact this character was completely absent from the episode! I asked the wikia admin about this and they told me they got the episode descriptions from an official website to act as placeholders until a more professional plot summary could be supplied. The admin also said that fans can insert fanon because in their minds, this character should have been involved, so they try to make it appear to everyone that they were involved when they were not.
So I'm now thinking the idea that Coverton reformed was an example of both these kinds of behavior and it never actually happened!
